When your AVG AntiVirus application doesn't recognize a program, it may block the application from running on your computer. For programs blocked from running by AVG's virus shield, you must create the exception in your anti-virus settings. For programs blocked from accessing the network or Internet, you must add an exception in your AVG firewall settings.
Create an Anti-Virus Exception
1.Open the user interface for your AVG anti-virus or security application.
5.Click the 'Exception Type' drop-down menu, and then select 'File' from the options.
6.Click the 'Browse' button and double-click the executable program file you want to set as trusted. Click 'OK' twice to apply the new setting. Click 'Yes' if Windows asks permission to save the change.
Allow a Program Through the Firewall
1.Open the user interface for AVG Internet Security, AVG Premium Security or AVG AntiVirus Business Edition. AVG AntiVirus and AVG AntiVirus Free do not include firewall protection.
3.Click 'Settings,' and then select 'Applications.' AVG displays a partial list of applications on your computer.
4.Find the entry for the application you want to set as trusted. Click 'Block' in the Action column next to the entry and change the setting to 'Allow.'
5.Click 'Add' if the program is not on the list. Click the browse button and double-click the name of the executable program file.
6.Click 'Create,' and then click 'OK.' Click 'OK' again to apply the new setting. Click 'Yes' if Windows asks permission to save the change.

Hi,I know you can turn off the AVG Control Center from the program, but I believe it leaves one AVG process running. I need to turn off AVG completely to uninstall and reinstall ZoneAlarm, but have been told not to kill that remaining process in Task Manager, but to turn it off the proper way. I just don't know what that way is..
What is the proper/best way to completely turn off AVG Free so I can uninstall/reinstall ZA?
At what point would I turn it off completely?
And while we're talking about AVG, anyone know the best settings for that in general? I just have it set to whatever the default is, but if it's anything like ZA, that's probably not the best settings..
Thanks!
You can prevent AVG Antivirus Free from displaying pop-up notifications such as update and AVG Advisor notifications by disabling the option to display system tray notifications. You can access the option in the program’s Advanced Settings window. Although AVG Antivirus Free’s notifications can provide you with information related to your computer’s performance and potential threat removals, they can also prove to be a significant distraction if there are too many notifications during your work day.
Step 1
Start the AVG program and then select 'Options.'
Step 2
Choose 'Advanced Settings' from the drop-down menu of options to open the Advanced Settings window.
Step 3
Click 'Appearance' to reveal the list of Appearance settings.
Step 4
Clear the 'Display System Tray Notifications' check box under System Tray Notifications.
Step 5
Temporarily Turn Off Avg Free
Click 'Apply' and then select the 'Yes' button on the User Account Control box to confirm that you agree to the changes.
Step 6
Click 'OK' to close the Advanced Settings window.
Tip
- If you only want to disable some notifications but not all of them, open the program's Advanced Settings window. Click 'Appearance' and clear the check box next to each notification you want to disable under System Tray Notification. Click the 'Apply' button. Do not clear the 'Display System Tray Notifications' check box.

I also faced similar problem while installing AVG 9.0. This happens because by default, AVG 9.0 turns off Windows Defender because AVG 9.0 has inbuilt spam protection and so that the spam protection do not conflict with each other, it switches off windows defender.
To resolve this issue follow the following steps:
To Disable Windows Defender:
1. Open start and type msconfig and press enter to open msconfig (Microsoft Confoguration utility). Provide password for confirmation or consent.
2. Under services tab, scroll down to the bottom to 'w' list and search for 'Windows Defender' entry and uncheck that box.
3. Then move to start up tab - this list contains all the programs which start on user account startup. Look for the entry 'Windows Defender' and uncheck the box to prevent automatically starting of Windows Defender.
4. Press OK and then restart your system.
To Enable Windows Defender (along with AVG spam protection)
1. Open Msconfig as described above.
2. Move to start tab in msconfig and check markWindows Defender entry and press OK to exit msconfig and select do not restart.
3. Press Start -> Type services.msc and right click the services.msc icon to select 'run as administrator'. Provide password or user consent (as applicable) to open the system services tool.
4. Scroll down to the bottom to the 'W' list and search for the entry 'Windows Defender'.
5. Right click that entry to select and choose properties -> choose startup type as 'Automatic'
6. Press OK to exit and then close the services tool and then restart your system.
I would personally recommend that if yuo are using AVG spam protection then switch off windows defender as running both programs together consumes more memory without any added protection.
I hope that this will solve your issue

Ravi Dixit
