Earlier today, Yusuf Mehdi announced the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, the newest feature update for Windows 10. I’m excited to share our October 2018 Update rollout plans, how you can get the update today, plus some new update experience enhancements.
As with prior Windows 10 feature rollouts, our goal is to deliver the October 2018 Update in a phased and controlled rollout to provide a great update experience for all. We are beginning the global rollout out via Windows Update in the coming weeks. As with previous rollouts, we will use real-time feedback and telemetry to update your device when data shows your device is ready and will have a great experience. You don’t have to do anything to get the update; it will roll out automatically to you through Windows Update.
Once the update is downloaded to your device and ready to be installed we’ll notify you. You are then able to pick a time that won’t disrupt you to finish the installation and reboot. We are continually working to improve the update experience with each new release of Windows 10.
The last Windows 10 feature update rollout, the April 2018 Update, utilized machine learning (ML) to identify devices that were ready to update, incorporating key attributes like compatibility data. By leveraging machine learning we were able to safely rollout quickly, and as a result the April 2018 Update is now the most widely used version of Windows 10. Further, our artificial intelligence/ML targeted rollout approach led to the lowest call and online support requests for any release of Windows 10.
With the October 2018 Update, we are expanding our use of machine learning and intelligently selecting devices that our data and feedback predict will have a smooth update experience. We will be further enhancing the performance of our machine learning model by incorporating more device signals such as improved driver telemetry and weighting of key features such as anti-malware software as we broaden the phased rollout. As we did with the April 2018 Update, we will be proactively monitoring all available feedback and update experience data, making the appropriate product updates when we detect issues, and adjusting the rate of rollout as needed to assure all devices have the best possible update experience.
While we encourage you to wait until the update is offered to your device, if you’re an advanced user on an actively serviced version of Windows 10 and would like to install the Windows 10 October 2018 Update now, you can do so by manually checking for updates. In the Search box in the taskbar, type “Check for updates.” Once there, simply click “Check for updates” to begin the download and installation process. We are also streamlining the ability for users who seek to manually check for updates by limiting this to devices with no known key blocking issues, based on our ML model. If we detect that your device has a compatibility issue, we will not install the update until that issue is resolved, even if you “Check for updates.” You can also watch this video that outlines how to get the October 2018 Update.
If you’re using a Windows 10 PC at work, you will need to check with your IT administrator for details on your organization’s specific plans to update.
Improving the update experience
We have heard clear feedback that while our users appreciate that updates keep their devices secure, they find the update experience can sometimes be disruptive. The October Update includes several improvements to the update experience to offer more control and further reduce disruptions.
Intelligent scheduling of update activity: For our many mobile users on laptops and 2-in-1 devices, we have improved Window’s ability to know when a device will not be in use and perform certain update activities then, so as not to disrupt the user. This ability to update at night when plugged in and not on battery power will help hide update activity and minimize user disruption from updates. To further minimize disruption (in case your system is updating overnight), Windows also silences audio when it wakes for Windows Updates. If your device hasn’t updated for several nights, we will then suggest you plug in your device so that we can update at night.
Intelligent reboot scheduling: Windows Update will now automatically determine the least disruptive opportunity, outside of Active Hours, and will use an enhanced machine-learning-powered activity check that can determine if a user is going to be away for a while or is only stepping away temporarily.
Faster updates, less down time: We’ve also made further improvements to the feature update installation process and are targeting to further shorten the amount of time your device is offline during updates by up to 31% compared to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (based on results from the Windows Insider Program) during the rollout of the October Update.
Smaller downloads: In the October Update we are introducing a new update package delivery design for monthly quality updates that creates a compact update package for easier and faster deployment. Users will benefit from the new small update size when installing applicable quality updates as they are 40% more efficient.
Enhanced privacy controls
We continue to focus on putting our customers in control so in the October Update we are enhancing the privacy choice and controls available to users to manage their privacy. We are now enabling each new account on a device to personally tailor the main privacy settings, instead of only the initial user who sets up the device. Furthermore, during new device setup, we now offer an activity history page that allows users the opportunity to opt in to sending activity history to Microsoft, to help improve cross device experiences. This allows users to pick up where they left off in various activities (such as a working on a Word document) on their other devices (Learn more about activity history).
Additionally, we are splitting Inking & typing personalization out from the Speech privacy page. This enables more granular control of your inking and typing personalization data by managing it separately from your online speech recognition data. Learn more about online speech recognition and inking & typing personalization.
Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) released
For our commercial customers, the release of the Windows 10, version 1809 on October 2, 2018 marks the start of the servicing timeline for the Semi-Annual Channel (“Targeted”) release; and beginning with this release, all future feature updates of Windows 10 Enterprise and Education editions that release around September will have a 30 month servicing timeline. Just as we’re immediately beginning rolling out the October Update in phases to consumers, we recommend IT administrators do the same within their organizations to validate that apps, devices, and infrastructure used by their organization work well with the new release before broadly deploying. We use data to guide our phased consumer rollout and encourage commercial customers to do the same through Windows Analytics. The update is now available through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Windows Update for Business (WUfB) and System Center Configuration Manager’s (SCCM) phased deployment. For an overview of what’s new and what’s changed, please see What’s new for IT pros in Windows 10, version 1809.
Continuously evolving Windows 10 and the update experience
We’re excited to bring you the latest Windows 10 Features and improvements and hope that you enjoy the improved update experience. Please provide us feedback as we continue our journey to evolve the update experience, so that our great new product and security features and other enhancements arrive without disruption.
Windows 10 Enterprise offers quite a few exclusive features that aren’t available in the Professional edition of Windows. You can get these features without reinstalling Windows, and without even having an Enterprise disc. In fact, you don’t even need your own Windows 10 Enterprise key to perform this upgrade.
How This Works
Why not just buy a product key for Windows 10 Enterprise? Well, Microsoft doesn’t even sell those to us mere mortals! While Microsoft offers paid upgrades to Windows 10 Professional, the Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 10 are only available through volume licensing channels. Microsoft previously offered Windows 7 Ultimate, which contained all the same features as the Enterprise versions of Windows, but there’s nothing like that for Windows 10.
According to Microsoft’s documentation, it’s possible to use the
DISM /online /Set-Edition:
command to change to a new edition of Windows. However, this didn’t work for us with Windows 10 and we encountered error messages. But we realized there’s a better solution. Most people don’t know this, but you can convert your existing Windows 10 Home or Professional system to Windows 10 Enterprise in just a few minutes–no disc necessary. You won’t lose any of your installed programs or files. To do this, you’ll need a product key, but there’s a bit of a loophole here: You don’t actually need a legitimate product key to use Windows 10, Enterprise or otherwise. To upgrade, you just need a key.
RELATED:You Don’t Need a Product Key to Install and Use Windows 10
This process uses a KMS key from Microsoft’s website. These publicly-available keys are normally used in organizations with Key Management Servers. Use them without a Key Management Server and Windows 10 will upgrade to Enterprise–it just won’t be truly “activated”.
And there’s the one downside to doing this: If you have a legitimate, activated Windows 10 system, the resulting Windows 10 installation won’t be activated and will show you a watermark telling you so. But that’s just about the only limitation you’ll encounter–the OS will otherwise work just fine, for as long as you like. If you have a Windows 10 virtual machine or secondary computer you want to test these Enterprise features on, this is an excellent solution.
This works even better if you do have a legitimate Windows 10 Enterprise product key through a business. Enter a legitimate product key and Windows 10 will upgrade to the Enterprise edition and become properly activated. This is a convenient solution for businesses, which can purchase computers that come with Home or Professional editions of Windows 10 and upgrade them without a reinstall.
How to Upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise
Rather than messing with DISM, you can do this entirely from Windows 10’s Settings app. To do so, open the Settings app from your Start menu, select “Update & Security,” and select “Activation.” Click the “Change Product Key” button here.
You’ll be asked to enter a new product key. If you have a legitimate Windows 10 Enterprise product key, you can enter it now. But if you don’t, grab the KMS client setup key for Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 will automatically convert itself to a Windows 10 Enterprise system. Remember, as this isn’t an valid key for activation, the resulting Windows 10 system won’t activate with Microsoft’s activation servers online. You may not want to do this on your primary Windows system.
Here’s the key you’ll need to enter for Windows 10 Enterprise:
The above Microsoft web page lists keys for other editions of Windows 10, so you could instead convert to Windows 10 Professional, Windows 10 Education, Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB (Long Term Servicing Branch), and other editions of Windows 10.
After a moment, Windows 10 will offer to “Upgrade your edition of Windows.” Be sure to save your open files and close applications before continuing, as your computer will restart during this process.
Windows 10 will reboot when the process is done. This process took us less than 20 minutes, even in a slower virtual machine.
After the process is complete, you can visit the Settings > Update & Security > Activation again. You’ll see that you’re now using Windows 10 Enterprise. All the Enterprise-only features will be available on your PC.
However, if you used a KMS key, your system will no longer be activated and Windows 10 will begin to inform you of this. That’s a fine trade-off for being able to try out these features in a virtual machine or on a secondary PC, but may not be convenient on your primary PC.
Does Microsoft have a problem with this this? We don’t really know, but if they did, they could fix the problem in several ways, so it’s likely this is by design. It’s a convenient tip for developers, enthusiasts, and system administrators who want see what those extra features are all about.

While the release date of the Windows 10 Anniversary Updateis August 2, 2016, not all users will receive the update on that date as Microsoft plans to roll it out gradually.
Microsoft plans to deliver the update via Windows Update starting 19:00 CET, and via the Media Creation Toolkit at around the same time.
Update: The new version of the Media Creation Toolkit has been released. Make sure you check the version after download to make sure it is the updated one. Instructions on how to do so are listed in the download and install chapter.
Using the Media Creation Toolkit has two advantages: first, you may get the update earlier, and second, you may download and create installation media instead of updating the PC directly. This way, you can perform offline updates among other things.
Note: We suggest you back up important data before you continue. Ideally, create a system backup so that you get an option to restore it if you run into issues during the update or afterwards. The update should pick up all files and programs, so that they remain available. Some programs may be removed however if they are not compatible with the new version of Windows 10.
Download and install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update
To get started, head over to Microsoft's website and click on the 'download tool now' button to get started. This downloads the Media Creation Tool to your system.
You find instructions on how to use the program once downloaded on the site as well if you require them.
Tip: To make sure you got the right version, right-click on the MediaCreationTool.exe file and select Properties. Switch to details, and verify that the version reads 10.0.14393.
When you run the program, you get two options to proceed Once you have read the license terms thoroughly, the following options are displayed:
- Update to the latest version of Windows 10.
- Create installation media for manual installation of the operating system or the update.
Both options are fine. Creating installation media is useful if you want to update multiple PCs, or need to update another PC, or want to keep the installation media at hand should the need arise to reinstall Windows.
If you want as quick of an update as possible, select the 'update to the latest version of Windows 10' option instead.
The program connects to the Microsoft server and downloads the Windows 10 installation files. This may take a while as Gigabytes of data are downloaded.
Tip: While you are waiting, check out AnandTech's epic the road to redstone article.
Windows 10 Trial Download
The tool verifies the download afterwards, and starts to create the Windows 10 media that is used to upgrade Windows 10 to the Anniversary Update version.
The process should be considerably faster than the download.
The tool checks for updates afterwards which may also take a moment to complete.
Then, after a couple of more screens of checking the PC and getting a few things ready, and another display of the license terms, and another updates check, making sure the PC has enough space, you are asked what to keep.
If you have selected to update the system, the installer will automatically select to install the correct edition of Windows 10 and keep all personal files and apps.
You may change that if you want to start with a blank slate, but will lose access to all files stored and programs installed on the device when you do.
Follow the instructions afterwards to complete the update to the new version.
Using Windows Update to update Windows 10
Download call of duty modern warfare 3. If you prefer to use Windows Update to update a device running Windows 10 to the Anniversary Update version, then you may do that as well.
Please note though that you may not get it right away as Microsoft mentioned that the roll out would be gradual. Still, updates may become available as early as 19:00 CET on August 2, 2016.
- Press Windows-I to open the Settings application.
- Select Update & Security.
- Click on the 'check for updates' button.
Windows should pick up the Anniversary Update and either install it directly or offer to install it.
It is listed as 'Feature update to windows 10, version 1607' on Windows Update.
Making sure you have the Anniversary Update installed
A cumulative Windows 10 update KB3176929 is delivered via Windows Update after the Anniversary Update is installed.
To find out if you are running the Anniversary Update on a machine, do the following:
- Tap on the Windows-key, type winver and hit the enter-key.
The window that opens should read 'Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.10)'.
Tip: Make sure you run Disk Cleanup after installing the Anniversary Update (and checking that everything works) as you will free up Gigabytes of disk space.
